I have lived in East Africa for 14 years, and have on a few occasions requested and received food aid, and ensured its delivery to those in greatest need. Most people, Christian or not, believe that human life has equal value everywhere, and we who have so much can afford to share our excess with those whose life is less secure, especially subsistence farmers in Africa.
